Local know-how

What to know before you land in Vietnam

Coverage and networks

Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone are the three networks that matter, and they are not interchangeable once you leave the cities. Ookla's H1 2025 connectivity report measured VinaPhone fastest on median 5G download at 594 Mbps, Viettel at 422 and MobiFone at 307, but the speed order is the reverse of the coverage order. Viettel carries over half of Vietnam's subscribers and had roughly 30,000 5G sites live by December 2025, claiming 90 percent outdoor population coverage against 70 percent indoors, which is why the 5G icon dies when you step into a concrete market hall. Mobile broadband reaches 99.6 percent of the country and the few hundred hamlets still unserved in mid-2025 sit in the northern mountains. Ma Pi Leng and the passes around Dong Van go silent between towns.

Landing and activation

You will land at Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, Da Nang or Phu Quoc. From 1 December 2026 international flights beyond roughly 1,000 km move off Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh, 40 km east of Ho Chi Minh City, so read the airport code on your ticket rather than assuming. Noi Bai's free network is @Airport Free Wifi - Goldsun, and the airport's own page says you tap Connect to Internet with no number asked, then reconnect every 30 minutes. That is enough to summon a car, not enough to wrestle with a PDF, so print the e-visa. Buying a local SIM instead means a counter, your original passport rather than a photocopy, and since Circular 08/2026 took effect on 15 April 2026, a face check too.

What connectivity costs here

Viettel's own 5G60T tourist pack is 60,000 dong, about 2.30 dollars, for seven days at 5 GB a day, with a 30-day version near 150,000 dong. VinaPhone's Tourist SIM is 199,000 dong for 15 days at 1 GB a day plus 50 international minutes, roughly eight times more per gigabyte. The arrivals counters at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat, where all three carriers keep desks, ask about 185,000 to 500,000 dong, 7 to 19 dollars, for broadly the same thing. In the cities every cafe, hotel and mall gives Wi-Fi away; in mountain homestays it becomes one shared line after dark. One day on a US carrier day pass, around 10 to 12 dollars, costs more than Viettel's entire week.

Which plan fits your trip

Daily life here runs through apps bolted to a phone number. Zalo, which VNG reported at 81 million monthly users in mid-2026, is how hotels, drivers and tour desks actually reach you, and Grab, Be and Green SM, the electric fleet renamed from Xanh SM in April 2026, all verify by SMS. Open those accounts on your home number before you fly. After that the load is maps and messaging, which is modest. A week split between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City fits 5 GB. Three weeks north to south, with sleeper trains, a motorbike stretch and navigation running all day, wants 10 to 15 GB. A month working from Da Nang or Hoi An is the case where unlimited earns its price.

Check your phone takes an eSIM

Almost every phone sold since 2018 does. Type your model, or dial *#06# and look for an EID.

  1. 1

Buy the plan and get your QR code

Pay once with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The activation QR arrives in your dashboard and email within seconds.

  2. 2

Scan the QR from your phone settings

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → + → Use QR code. Or open the GetSim app and tap install, no QR scanning needed.

  3. 3

    Land, switch it on

Going to more than just Vietnam?

A regional bundle covers Vietnam and 17+ other countries on a single eSIM, often cheaper than buying separate single-country plans for a multi-stop trip.

Frequently asked about Vietnam eSIMs

Yes. The GetSim eSIM installs as a second profile on your phone. Your home SIM and number stay active for calls and SMS. Set the GetSim eSIM as the default for cellular data only.

Plans run on tier-1 mobile networks in Vietnam. The exact carrier depends on the plan; you'll see the network name on each plan card before you pay.

Typical activation is 1–3 minutes after switching the eSIM on. Many travelers install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and toggle it on the moment the plane lands.

GetSim eSIMs are data-only. For voice and SMS, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram. They all work seamlessly over the eSIM data. If you need a real phone number for verifications, pair the eSIM with a GetSim virtual number from the same wallet.

Top up the eSIM directly from your dashboard or the GetSim app, no need to install a new profile. Top-ups are billed per-GB at the same rate as the original plan.
