What to know before you land in Türkiye
Coverage and networks
Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye and Türk Telekom switched 5G on together on 1 April 2026, in the centres of all 81 provinces, with two more years to cover the rest of the country. Read it as a city feature. Through 2026 most of your data still rides 4.5G, and the gap you notice is between provinces rather than inside them. Turkcell is the largest network at roughly 40 million lines, against 28.5 million on Türk Telekom and 25 million on Vodafone, and it holds Opensignal's coverage award, the measure that counts once you leave the coast. Vodafone built on 700 MHz, so its 5G carries further out of town; Türk Telekom backhauls over its own fibre. Opensignal clocked first-month 5G near 200 Mbps against under 40 on 4G.
Landing and activation
Order of operations matters here. Since July 2025 the regulator BTK has blocked foreign eSIM sellers' websites and apps from inside Türkiye, so installing a profile, topping one up or even opening a support chat can fail once you land. Buy and install before you fly. Istanbul Airport's İGA WiFi is free and unlimited, but there are only two doors in: an SMS code sent to a phone number, or a terminal kiosk that reads your passport and prints an access code. Take the kiosk; the SMS route needs a number the profile does not have. Sabiha Gökçen's Free Wi-Fi dropped its one-hour limit in March 2025; Antalya still meters one free hour against a kiosk PIN. Turkish prepaid SIMs are sold against a scanned passport.
What connectivity costs here
Buying on arrival is the expensive door. The 24-hour operator shops in Istanbul Airport arrivals want roughly 1,900 to 3,200 TL, about $40 to $66, for a 20 to 25 GB pack, cheapest at Türk Telekom and dearest at Vodafone. Pay in lira; the dollar and euro boards price badly. In town Turkcell's Tourist Welcome Pack is 1,800 TL, near $37, for 20 GB over 28 days. The passport that buys it starts a 120-day clock on your handset; registering a foreign phone later costs 54,258 TL, about $1,120. Hotels and cafes give Wi-Fi away, and none of it wants the passport the SIM did. Roaming runs £3.50 a day on EE to £7 on O2 and Three, and Roam Like At Home stops at the EU border.
Which plan fits your trip
Size it around driving. An Istanbul week runs on BiTaksi and Uber, which here dispatches the same licensed yellow taxis, plus live ferry and Marmaray times, and lands near 3 to 5 GB. Distance moves that number. Istanbul to Cappadocia to the Lycian coast is days of turn-by-turn navigation between provinces, exactly where 5G stops and 4G takes over, so a two-week loop wants 10 GB once translation, hotel messaging and balloon video go through it too. Save offline maps before you leave the city, because the eastern mountain roads and the Taurus passes are where a thin allowance shows. If Greece, Bulgaria or Georgia share the itinerary, check the country list carefully: Türkiye is outside the EU roaming zone and European coverage often skips it.
