What to know before you land in India
Coverage and networks
India has four operators and the gap between them is the whole story. Jio and Airtel hold roughly 39 and 38 percent of active subscribers and are the only two with 5G worth the name; Jio declared its nationwide rollout complete in August 2023, having passed 2,500 cities that April. Vi sits third on about 15 percent and did not switch on 5G anywhere until Mumbai in March 2025, so on Vi plan for 4G. BSNL holds about 7 percent and only inaugurated its home-grown 4G network, some 97,500 towers, in September 2025. As the state carrier it builds where the private networks will not, which is why the high passes on the Manali to Leh road and the Spiti side valleys thin out to BSNL bars or nothing.
Landing and activation
International arrivals clear at Delhi's Terminal 3, Mumbai's Terminal 2 and, since September 2023, Bengaluru's Terminal 2. The first obstacle is not the SIM counter, it is the free airport Wi-Fi. Mumbai's has long sent its login code by SMS to an Indian mobile number, run 45 minutes, then pushed you to a paid pack, and the airport put in kiosks that scan a passport and boarding pass to issue a coupon precisely because so many arrivals have no local number. Assume that shape everywhere. The local SIM alternative is slower than it looks: Aadhaar eKYC, which activates a connection on the spot, is for residents, so a visitor fills in paper KYC with passport, visa, photo and an Indian address, then waits.
What connectivity costs here
India sells the cheapest mobile data on earth and it is not close. Jio reported average revenue per user of Rs 211 a month in its Q2 FY2025-26 results, roughly $2.50, and that is the real price level: a month of daily-data prepaid with unlimited domestic calls runs a few hundred rupees, under $5, from a neighbourhood shop. Airport counters charge for the convenience, so compare before handing over cash. Hotel Wi-Fi is usually open and fine. Station Wi-Fi is not: RailTel's RailWire reaches over 5,000 stations but gives 30 slow free minutes before charging. Against all of that, a single day on a home carrier's international day pass costs more than a whole month of Indian prepaid.
Which plan fits your trip
Budget more than you would for Europe, because India is run from a phone: ride-hailing, directions, QR payments, long stretches in traffic with a map open. Two weeks round the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan sits fine on 10 GB; a month of backpacking, or hotspotting a laptop, wants 20 GB or unlimited. Uber works in the big cities, as does Ola, which rebranded to Ola Consumer in 2024 and now runs only in India. The real local risk is policy, not coverage. Access Now counted 771 government-ordered internet shutdowns here between 2016 and 2023, more than the rest of the world combined, and Kashmir's 552-day cut is the longest recorded anywhere. Orders hit mobile data first and often spare fixed lines, so cache maps and note your hotel's Wi-Fi.
