What to know before you land in United Kingdom
Coverage and networks
Vodafone and Three completed their merger on 31 May 2025 and now trade as VodafoneThree, still selling both brands, so four UK networks have become three sets of masts. EE and O2 are the others. EE runs the Emergency Services Network and claims 4G across more than 90% of UK landmass, which is why it holds a bar where others do not. Standalone 5G is where they split: EE lists over 610 towns and cities, O2 around 500 covering roughly 70% of people, Vodafone only a handful of cities, and Three none yet. The Shared Rural Network hit its 95% landmass target a year early, adding 12 masts in Eryri and seven in the Lake District by August 2026. The missing 5% is mostly remote Scotland and mid Wales.
Landing and activation
Sort the ETA before you fly. It costs £20, covers visits across two years, and from 25 February 2026 it is enforced without discretion, so airlines check it at boarding. Heathrow's free network is _Heathrow Wi-Fi, underscore included, and the portal wants an email address or a social handle rather than a texted code, which matters when you land without a local number. Gatwick's Vinci-run Wi-Fi is also free and uncapped; Manchester allows four hours a day, Stansted and Edinburgh two. Nobody registers a SIM here, which is why arrivals-hall vending machines sell to anyone with a bank card. The Elizabeth line into central London has had signal in its tunnels since December 2024; the deep Tube lines are only being finished through 2026.
What connectivity costs here
Heathrow sells SIMs at Sim Local counters in every terminal, including baggage reclaim, in WHSmith, and from arrivals vending machines stocked with Lycamobile, EE and Three. A short prepaid pack runs roughly £10 to £20 (about $13 to $27), up to double what the same data costs in town. Britain is genuinely cheap once you leave the airport: Lebara and Smarty sell 20GB for £8 to £9 a month, giffgaff 20GB for £10, so about $11 to $13. Hotel Wi-Fi is usually free but thin, and Travelodge gives 30 minutes per 24 hours before charging £3.50 (roughly $4.50) a day. Bringing your own line is billed by the day rather than the gigabyte: AT&T and Verizon $12, T-Mobile $10 for a day and 2GB.
Which plan fits your trip
A London week barely dents a plan. You tap in at Tube gates and on buses with a contactless card or phone, so there is no ticketing app to keep loaded, and TfL Go and Citymapper are light. Five to seven days sits at 3 to 5GB. Navigation moves the needle here, not translation. Data climbs the moment you leave the cities: a Highlands, Eryri, Lake District or Cornwall drive runs maps all day, and the stretches with no bar are exactly the ones where you want rerouting. Two weeks touring by car is a 10GB trip. A UK plan stops at the Irish Sea, so a Dublin leg has to be checked against the coverage list rather than assumed.
