Local know-how

What to know before you land in Australia

Coverage and networks

Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are the three networks, and in 2026 the way they advertise coverage changed. A new ACMA mapping standard forced all of them onto a common test, and Telstra's advertised footprint fell from a claimed three million square kilometres to just over 2.14 million. Optus publishes roughly 1.2 million square kilometres and 98.5 percent of the population; Vodafone sits close behind after its regional network-sharing deal with Optus went live on 30 January 2025. All three now put 5G near 94 to 95 percent of people, which means cities and large towns. Highways are 4G, and the interior has nothing from anyone. Since 3G closed in October 2024 the low band is 700 MHz Band 28, and a handset that lacks it can be barred outright.

Landing and activation

Sydney Airport Free WiFi asks you to answer a couple of questions and accept the terms, with no phone number involved. BNE Free Wi-Fi makes you register details on a login page first, and Melbourne's complimentary Wi-Fi covers T2, T3 and T4 with sessions capped at three hours under its own terms. Ahead of that come SmartGate for ePassport holders and biosecurity, where you declare food, wooden souvenirs and muddy boots; the dogs and X-rays are not theatre. The orange paper arrival card is being phased out for a digital Australia Travel Declaration, running on selected Qantas flights since October 2024 and due everywhere before the end of 2027. A local prepaid SIM legally requires an ID check, meaning your passport.

What connectivity costs here

A 28-day recharge on a major network sits around AUD 39 to 49, near US$28 to 35 at 0.72. Boost, the only reseller with the full Telstra prepaid network, lists $39 for 60 GB and $59 for 105 GB; Optus gives 50 GB on a $40 recharge for the first three, then 30 GB. The Optus and Vodafone counters at Sydney's T1 arrivals exits are the carriers' own stores rather than third-party kiosks, so you pay shop prices plus a queue and the ID check. Twelve-month long-expiry plans run about AUD 250 to 300. Hotels and hostels include Wi-Fi, and VicFreeWiFi still covers Melbourne's CBD. Dearest by far is the phone you flew in with, billed by the day where everything above is billed by the month.

Which plan fits your trip

Distance is what burns data here. Sydney to Melbourne is roughly 880 km by road, the Great Ocean Road and the Red Centre keep navigation running all day, and signal drops mid-route with no warning. In town the load is light. Nothing needs translating, and transport no longer needs an app: Melbourne's myki began taking contactless bank cards and phones for full-fare trips in July 2026, joining Sydney's Opal and Queensland's Translink. Budget 3 to 5 GB for a city week. Two weeks up the east coast with daily rideshare, and Uber and DiDi are what remain since Ola quit in April 2024, lands near 10 GB. A month driving wants unlimited.

Almost every phone sold since 2018 does. Type your model, or dial *#06# and look for an EID.

Buy the plan and get your QR code

Pay once with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The activation QR arrives in your dashboard and email within seconds.

  2. 2

Scan the QR from your phone settings

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → + → Use QR code. Or open the GetSim app and tap install, no QR scanning needed.

  3. 3

    Land, switch it on

Crossing borders?

Going to more than just Australia?

A regional bundle covers Australia and 195+ other countries on a single eSIM, often cheaper than buying separate single-country plans for a multi-stop trip.

Frequently asked about Australia eSIMs

Yes. The GetSim eSIM installs as a second profile on your phone. Your home SIM and number stay active for calls and SMS. Set the GetSim eSIM as the default for cellular data only.

Plans run on tier-1 mobile networks in Australia. The exact carrier depends on the plan; you'll see the network name on each plan card before you pay.

Typical activation is 1–3 minutes after switching the eSIM on. Many travelers install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and toggle it on the moment the plane lands.

GetSim eSIMs are data-only. For voice and SMS, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram. They all work seamlessly over the eSIM data. If you need a real phone number for verifications, pair the eSIM with a GetSim virtual number from the same wallet.

Top up the eSIM directly from your dashboard or the GetSim app, no need to install a new profile. Top-ups are billed per-GB at the same rate as the original plan.
