What to know before you land in United States
Coverage and networks
Three networks now carry the whole country. T-Mobile's 2.5 GHz mid-band layer is the fast 5G you can count on, past 300 million people covered by its own count; Verizon and AT&T lean on C-band, strong in metros and thinner between them, and their low-band 5G often performs like decent LTE. Verizon also gates 5G Ultra Wideband to its priciest prepaid tier, so a cheap Verizon-based plan may never touch the quick layer. UScellular was absorbed into T-Mobile in August 2025 and Boost shifted its traffic onto AT&T's towers that November, so there is no fourth option left. Coverage gets sparse across the rural interior West and disappears inside the big parks. In New York every underground station has signal; the tunnels between them are still a work in progress.
Landing and activation
Your first hour belongs to CBP, and phones stay pocketed until you clear the booth. Returning Visa Waiver travelers on an approved ESTA can file in the Mobile Passport Control app up to four hours before landing and use its shorter line at 37 US airports, JFK, LAX, O'Hare and Miami among them; first-time ESTA visitors are not eligible. Airport Wi-Fi is where a data-only phone can stall. JFK, O'Hare and Miami get you online after a short ad and a click, but the LAX portal asks for a mobile number and a four-digit code sent by call or SMS. Nobody registers a SIM in the US, though no carrier store sits in arrivals either: at LAX the fallback is a currency-exchange counter at currency-exchange prices.
What connectivity costs here
Prepaid bills by the month here, so two weeks pays for thirty days. T-Mobile Prepaid asks $45 (about €39) for 15 GB or $50 for unlimited, both before tax. Verizon's 15 GB prepaid is also $45, its unlimited $60, and Ultra Wideband sits on the $70 tier. Visible is $25 flat with taxes and fees inside the price; Cricket's 10 GB runs about $30 but adds $25 to activate in a store. A SIM off the LAX exchange counter costs several times any of these. Hotel Wi-Fi is free at the chains and folded into a resort fee at the ones that are not. Roaming rarely beats them: O2's Travel Bolt On is £7 a day, and Three leaves the US out of Go Roam altogether.
Which plan fits your trip
Almost every American itinerary is a drive with navigation running for hours, so pull Google Maps down for the desert legs and the NPS app's offline download before the parks take the signal. In cities the drain is ride-hailing: Uber and Lyft everywhere, and Waymo now carrying public riders across fourteen metros, Phoenix and Los Angeles through to Miami, Dallas and Nashville, each needing live data at both ends. Disney and Universal run queues and food orders through their apps, and stadium tickets exist nowhere else. No translation app to feed here. One city for a week runs 5 to 10 GB; two weeks behind the wheel is 20 GB or unlimited. Add Toronto or Cancún and you are on two more national markets, neither covered by a US plan.
