Proximus, Orange Belgium and Telenet own the masts, and Telenet sells to consumers under the BASE name. Proximus and Orange pool their radio equipment in a joint venture called MWingz, so the two often transmit from the same site while their spectrum and results stay separate. Digi, the fourth licence holder and a partnership with Belgian operator Citymesh, runs its own 5G across about 30 percent of the population and leans on Proximus 4G everywhere else. Household figures flatter all of them: outdoor 5G reaches more than 95 percent of homes on each network, but measured by land area the regulator puts Telenet near 98 percent, Proximus 94 and Orange 82. Wallonia trails Flanders, so the thin patches turn up in the Ardennes. 3G was switched off in 2025.
At Brussels Airport the free network is called Brussels Airport Free Wifi and asks only that you accept the terms once, after which it recognises your device on later visits. Charleroi covers both terminals and steers you toward its CRL Airport app, worth downloading before you fly. Buying a Belgian SIM is the slower path. Counter-terrorism rules oblige operators to tie every prepaid card to a named person, and at a shop counter a passport or an EU identity card settles it; identifying yourself online instead needs a Belgian eID and PIN, or an itsme account no visitor can open. The catch waits downtown. Wifi.brussels, the region's free network of more than 200 hotspots, will not open your account until it has texted a code to a working number.
A Proximus Pay&Go+ starter costs €5, about $6, and comes with €10 credit and 3 GB; reloads then buy 3 GB for €15 or 5 GB for €25. BASE prices by the top-up, €10 for 1 GB, €15 for 4 GB, €25 for 8 GB, then charges €0.50 a megabyte once the bundle empties. Digi's prepaid card carries 15 GB for a month at €5, though it works only in Belgium. Monthly plans undercut that: the regulator's May 2026 comparison found 25 to 30 GB for €5 to €9. Belgium's fixed networks rate good to excellent, so the hotel and cafe Wi-Fi resting on them is both free and quick. An EU SIM roams free; a US day pass outprices a month of Belgian data inside a week.
Distances here are short: Ghent and Antwerp sit well under an hour from Brussels by train, Bruges about an hour. You ride trains constantly, and the regulator's 2025 tests inside carriages on sixteen main lines found data clearly worse than roadside: YouTube clips played through unbroken about half the time on the best network, two times in five on the worst. Load maps and tickets on the platform. Budget 2 to 3 GB for a long weekend across Brussels, Ghent and Bruges, 5 GB for a week that adds the coast or the Ardennes, more if Bolt moves you. Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne are short hops from Brussels-Midi, and the Eurostar is the one that leaves the EU roaming zone behind.
Almost every phone sold since 2018 does. Type your model, or dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Pay once with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The activation QR arrives in your dashboard and email within seconds.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → + → Use QR code. Or open the GetSim app and tap install, no QR scanning needed.
Set the GetSim eSIM as your default for cellular data. Your home SIM keeps handling calls and 2FA SMS in the background.
A regional bundle covers Belgium and 41+ other countries on a single eSIM, often cheaper than buying separate single-country plans for a multi-stop trip.
