Local know-how

What to know before you land in Brazil

Coverage and networks

Brazil's mobile market belongs to Vivo, Claro and TIM, which split Oi's mobile business in 2022; Algar Telecom, based in Uberlândia, is a regional fourth, its 4G in 69 municipalities. Vivo has the most customers, TIM the widest footprint: by July 2026 its 4G covered all 5,570 municipalities, against 4,970 for Vivo and 4,738 for Claro. Covering a municipality means its town centre, not the highway to the next one. 5G on 3.5 GHz opened in Brasília in July 2022; four years on it had reached about 1,700 of them, TIM in the most, under a third of the country but 72 percent of its people. Elsewhere the 5G icon rides on 2.3 GHz or shared 4G. Expect little on Amazon river journeys, at Pantanal lodges and on Chapada trails.

Landing and activation

Long-haul flights into São Paulo land at Guarulhos Terminal 3, where the Wi-Fi is the easy part: pick .GRU WIFI, tap once on Boingo's page, and you get four free hours as two two-hour sessions with no signup, so nothing hangs on a text you cannot receive. The chip is the hard part. Guarulhos lists its SIM shop, Skill SIM, in the Terminal 3 international departures hall and past Duty Free, not in arrivals; Galeão keeps a chip counter, Aerochip, in Terminal 2 arrivals until 22:00. Either way the line is registered to a document before it works, and what a given counter accepts from a foreign passport varies, so plan on landing offline and treat the local SIM as a day-two errand.

What connectivity costs here

Brazilian prepaid is cheap; registering it is the real cost. TIM sells a chip with recharge for R$30 (about $6, €5) carrying 16 GB for 30 days, 4 GB of that social-only. Claro works differently: the recharge buys credit validity, R$15 for 30 days up to R$100 for 180, with data bonuses layered on top, and its first-recharge offer of 10 GB from R$20 (about $4) online runs out after seven days, not the month people assume. Top-ups take cash at any lotérica counter. Hotels include Wi-Fi; mall and cafe hotspots often want a CPF or a Brazilian mobile number for an SMS code. Keeping your own line costs more: Verizon charges $12 a day, fast for 5 GB, then 3G.

Which plan fits your trip

Brazil is arranged over WhatsApp, which barely dents a data plan. Rides do: Uber and DiDi-owned 99 are how you cross a city, and both need live data at each end. You fly between regions, but drives inside one are long, Rio to São Paulo roughly 430 km, and Waze on the Via Dutra or the Northeast coast keeps a screen lit for hours. Pull maps down before the Pantanal, Chapada Diamantina or any Amazon boat; signal ends there long before your allowance does. Portuguese-only menus keep translation apps busy past the beachfronts. A Rio and São Paulo week sits at 5 GB, two weeks of beaches, rides and daily uploads at 10 GB; Carnival or a remote-work month belongs on unlimited.

Set up your Brazil eSIM in under a minute

0

Check your phone takes an eSIM

Almost every phone sold since 2018 does. Type your model, or dial *#06# and look for an EID.

  1. 1

Buy the plan and get your QR code

Pay once with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The activation QR arrives in your dashboard and email within seconds.

  2. 2

Scan the QR from your phone settings

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → + → Use QR code. Or open the GetSim app and tap install, no QR scanning needed.

  3. 3

    Land, switch it on

Set the GetSim eSIM as your default for cellular data. Your home SIM keeps handling calls and 2FA SMS in the background.

Your real number stays online. The eSIM only handles data. Calls, SMS, banking 2FA all keep arriving on your home SIM.
Crossing borders?

Going to more than just Brazil?

A regional bundle covers Brazil and 195+ other countries on a single eSIM, often cheaper than buying separate single-country plans for a multi-stop trip.

Frequently asked about Brazil eSIMs

Yes. The GetSim eSIM installs as a second profile on your phone. Your home SIM and number stay active for calls and SMS. Set the GetSim eSIM as the default for cellular data only.

Plans run on tier-1 mobile networks in Brazil. The exact carrier depends on the plan; you'll see the network name on each plan card before you pay.

Typical activation is 1–3 minutes after switching the eSIM on. Many travelers install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and toggle it on the moment the plane lands.

GetSim eSIMs are data-only. For voice and SMS, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram. They all work seamlessly over the eSIM data. If you need a real phone number for verifications, pair the eSIM with a GetSim virtual number from the same wallet.

Top up the eSIM directly from your dashboard or the GetSim app, no need to install a new profile. Top-ups are billed per-GB at the same rate as the original plan.
