What to know before you land in Mexico
Coverage and networks
Telcel and AT&T are the only retail operators running their own radio networks. The regulator's late-2025 count gives Telcel 57.9 percent of Mexico's 144.5 million active lines and AT&T 16.4; Movistar resells AT&T under a deal set to hold through 2030, and Walmart's Bait resells Altán Redes' wholesale 4G, which has no 5G at all. Opensignal measured Bait at 14.6 Mbps average download against 38.0 on the two real networks, and Telcel at 180.7 Mbps on 5G, more than triple AT&T; AT&T's one win is availability, 99.1 percent. Mexican 5G sits on mid-band spectrum with almost nothing below 1 GHz beneath it, so it holds in city centres, struggles through walls, and gets sparse across rural Oaxaca, Chiapas and Baja.
Landing and activation
Mexico City's airport documents no free Wi-Fi anywhere on its own site, not in the passenger services list, the FAQ or its 2026 press releases, so plan for an offline arrivals hall. Its two terminals sit about three kilometres apart, joined by the Aerotrén; Metro Line 5 reaches Terminal 1 only, Metrobús Line 4 reaches both. Felipe Ángeles is 44 km north and has had a train to Buenavista since April 2026, 43 to 50 minutes for about 45 pesos. Cancún spreads arrivals across four terminals, with a shuttle every ten minutes and a Tren Maya station alongside. Under the December 2025 rules a Mexican SIM must be linked to a CURP or RFC; foreigners show a passport, plus a liveness check when registering online.
What connectivity costs here
Prepaid sells in recharge tiers, and the 100 peso top-up, near six dollars at September 2026's rate of about 17 to the dollar, is the unit everything gets priced against. Opensignal put Bait's cost per gigabyte at under half Telcel's or AT&T's, though Altán's wholesale increases have been eroding that since 2025. The real price of a local SIM now is the admin: linking it to a CURP or passport means a counter visit or an online identity check. Airport counters quote in dollars and charge for the convenience. Hotels charge nothing for Wi-Fi and it holds in the lobby, less so in coastal rooms. US carriers often fold Mexico into a domestic plan; European ones bill it as a far zone.
Which plan fits your trip
Size it right on the first pass, because switching to a local SIM mid-trip now means an identity check rather than a five-minute counter stop. Navigation is what drains data here. The Yucatán runs between Mérida, Valladolid, the cenotes and Tulum have long thin stretches, so pull the map area down before you leave the last town, and note that Tren Maya and the Buenavista airport train both sell and show seats in apps. A Riviera Maya week leaning on hotel Wi-Fi sits at 3 to 5 GB; two weeks of Mexico City plus a Yucatán or Oaxaca road trip runs 10 GB or more. A US or Canadian leg is a separate network market, not an extension of this one.
