What to know before you land in Croatia
Coverage and networks
The Dalmatian coast in August loads several times its winter population onto the same masts, which is the fact that decides what Croatian coverage actually feels like. Three networks carry it: Hrvatski Telekom, the incumbent, which also sells as Simpa and bonbon; A1 Hrvatska, whose Tomato brand rides 092 numbers; and Telemach, the former Tele2, renamed by United Group in November 2020. All three have run 5G since around 2021 and A1 advertises 98 percent coverage, though figures like that describe reach rather than speed. Where coverage genuinely weakens is the Velebit and Biokovo ridges, the uninhabited Kornati and the long crossings to Vis and Lastovo. Zagreb has trams and no metro, so nothing drops underground. Near Neum, phones still catch Bosnian masts across the water, outside EU roaming.
Landing and activation
Zagreb's Franjo Tuđman moved about 4.7 million passengers in 2025 through the single terminal opened in 2017, which advertises free Wi-Fi around the clock. Split is the summer crush, close to four million people through a terminal at Kaštela nineteen kilometres out, built deliberately without jet bridges because most of its traffic is low-cost, so you cross the apron on foot in whatever the bura is doing. Dubrovnik, renamed Ruđer Bošković Airport in 2023, takes arrivals through Terminal B at Čilipi. Croatia never adopted mandatory SIM registration, unlike Germany, Italy or Austria, so nobody asks for a passport at the counter. The euro and Schengen both landed in 2023, so a flight from inside Schengen meets no passport control at all.
What connectivity costs here
Prices are in euros now: the kuna was withdrawn on 1 January 2023, so figures in older guidebooks are conversions rather than prices. Local prepaid is cheap here. Hrvatski Telekom's Simpa starter costs a couple of euros and hands most of it back as credit, currently €2.65 on the account, and all three operators sell visitor bundles that put a week or a month of tourist-sized data somewhere around the €10 to €25 mark, roughly $11 to $27. Tisak kiosks, petrol stations and post offices sell them without paperwork. Accommodation Wi-Fi is free nearly everywhere, though an island apartment block often shares one consumer line and crawls after dinner in August. EU phones roam free. Everyone else buys days, the wrong unit where months cost €10 to €25.
Which plan fits your trip
Most Croatian itineraries are a car and a boat. The Adriatic Highway keeps navigation lit for hours, and parking in Zagreb and most coastal towns is still billed by SMS to a short code, which a data-only profile cannot send: use the ZgPark app in Zagreb, the town's own app on the coast, or the meter. Screenshot ferry bookings before you reach the port at Split or Zadar. Uber and Bolt both work in Zagreb, Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik, Bolt also in Šibenik, Rijeka and Pula. A week around Split with two island days sits inside 5 GB; two weeks driving Istria to Dubrovnik wants 10 to 15 GB. Slovenia and Italy stay inside EU roaming, Mostar and Kotor do not.
