What to know before you land in Egypt
Coverage and networks
All four Egyptian operators switched 5G on the same day, 4 June 2025, at a ceremony by the Pyramids: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, which still reads Etisalat on most shop signs, and WE from Telecom Egypt. The build has kept moving since. Vodafone alone went from roughly 2,000 covered urban areas at launch to more than 3,000 by December 2025, Alexandria to Aswan, and a $3.5 billion spectrum deal in February 2026 doubled the spectrum all four have to build on. The regulator's last published road survey, from early 2024 and so pre-5G, measured WE fastest on average download and Orange slowest, the other two between them. Coverage tracks the Nile, the Delta and the highways. Sinai's interior and open desert have none.
Landing and activation
EgyptAir and its Star Alliance partners work out of Cairo's Terminal 3; the rest split between Terminals 1 and 2. Visa kiosks sit before the immigration counters and sell a paper visa for $30, cash only, valid 30 days. Since 1 August 2026 Cairo also sells a digital visa on arrival for $36, card only, from self-service machines or the Visa on Arrival portal. Fly into Sharm el-Sheikh for under 15 days and a free stamp covers Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba, but nothing past them. Then the handset rule, which matters more than the SIM rule: a foreign profile costs you nothing, while putting an Egyptian SIM in your phone starts a 90-day clock on the handset, after which it is blocked until you register it and pay customs.
What connectivity costs here
The pound has traded near 50 to the dollar through 2026 after years of hard devaluation, so read prices in pounds and check the rate the week you travel. Local data is cheap: Numbeo's September 2026 sample puts an Egyptian monthly line with calls and 10 GB or more at about 373 pounds, near $7. Vodafone sells its tourist line, restricted to visitors, at its airport branch and at any Vodafone shop. The rate that stings is out of bundle, where Vodafone charges 0.19 pounds a megabyte, near 190 a gigabyte. In the cities, hotel and cafe Wi-Fi costs nothing and escapes that per-megabyte rate. Egypt sits in Vodafone UK's worldwide zone, outside inclusive European roaming, so a fortnight on your own line costs a multiple of everything above.
Which plan fits your trip
The catch here is not data, it is voice over data. Egypt's block on internet calling has not been lifted: Freedom House's 2025 report still found VoIP services inaccessible, WhatsApp calling among them, after the regulator said in late 2024 it would end the ban, so plan to type rather than call home. Sign into your ride-hailing and banking apps before you fly, since a data-only line cannot take an SMS code. Uber's Egyptian city list covers Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada and the Delta and canal towns but stops short of Luxor, Aswan and Sharm el-Sheikh, where you settle fares with drivers. Cairo runs about a gigabyte a day. Ten days of Cairo, a cruise and the coast fit 10 GB; a Cairo weekend, 3 to 5.
