What to know before you land in Japan
Coverage and networks
Opensignal's April 2026 report splits Japan's awards across the four networks here: Rakuten Mobile takes none, docomo the widest geographic coverage, au (KDDI) the steadiest quality at 88.3 percent, and SoftBank both the fastest downloads and the most time on 5G, at 27.4 percent. That last number is the one to keep: official 5G population coverage has passed 98 percent, yet even the leading network's users sit on 5G only about a quarter of the time, and the prefecture spread runs from roughly 35 percent in Osaka to around 9 percent in Yamanashi. Coverage genuinely drops above the treeline, and au switches on 5G at the Fuji summit only for the July to early September climbing season. Docomo closed Japan's last 3G network in March 2026.
Landing and activation
No major Japanese airport puts its Wi-Fi behind an SMS code. FreeWiFi-NARITA covers all three Narita terminals and the connecting buses, Haneda runs HANEDA-FREE-WIFI, and Kansai runs FreeWiFi-KansaiAirports. Each is a terms page and a tap. Fill in Visit Japan Web before you fly; since March 2024 it issues one combined code for immigration and customs, so save the image to your photos. Foreign-certified handsets get a 90-day exemption from Japan's radio-marking rule, counted from entry. SoftBank's counters at Narita Terminals 1 and 2, Haneda Terminal 3 and Kansai Terminal 1 want a passport before they sell you anything. Mobile Suica is the real trap: the Welcome Suica app is iPhone-only, and most non-Japanese Android phones cannot hold a Suica at all.
What connectivity costs here
Buying locally is not cheap. SoftBank lists its own data-only Prepaid SIM for Travel from about 1,650 yen (roughly $11), passport required. Bic Camera, Kojima and Sofmap carry IIJ's Japan Travel SIM Unlimited, launched in June 2026 on the au network at around 7,700 to 14,080 yen (about $49 to $90) for 10 to 31 days, with tethering throttled after 9 to 30 GB; the older capacity range, 3 GB to 55 GB on docomo, is priced by each shop. Free Wi-Fi has shrunk: 7-Eleven dropped 7SPOT in March 2022 and FamilyMart followed that July, leaving Lawson the only chain with its own, at 60 minutes a session and five a day. Your own line stays the costly default, at $12 a day on AT&T plus $6 per extra line.
Which plan fits your trip
Japan spends data in constant small bites: transit lookups at every change, the camera translating a menu, Tabelog, QR ordering, mobile Suica top-ups and the GO taxi app after the last train. Offline Google Maps has covered Japan since 2019, but offline it routes only by car, and platforms and departure times are exactly what you need live. Tokyo Metro and Toei tunnels have carried a signal between stations, not just inside them, since 2013, so going underground saves you nothing. Budget about 1 GB a day. Two weeks across Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka lands near 10 to 15 GB; take 20 GB or unlimited if you tether on the Shinkansen rather than trust its shared free Wi-Fi.
