What to know before you land in Thailand
Coverage and networks
Three brands sell SIM cards in Thailand and two of them are the same network. True's 2023 amalgamation with dtac left both names on shop fronts, and Opensignal's 2025 Thai testing scored TrueMove H and dtac identically at 32.1 percent 5G availability, against AIS on 38.8 percent and a faster 5G download, 105 Mbps to True's 84. True Corporation reported 48.6 million mobile subscribers at the end of Q2 2026 and AIS 47.1 million; state-owned NT is a distant third and reaches most travellers only as the operator behind the free airport Wi-Fi. Set the marketing against the measurement: True advertises 93 percent nationwide 5G, but that counts population, while Opensignal counts time on the network. Outside Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, plan on 4G.
Landing and activation
Fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before you fly. It has been compulsory for non-Thai nationals since May 2025, the portal opens only three days before you land, and the QR code arrives by email, so save it offline rather than loading it in the immigration hall. Some Suvarnabhumi arrivals park at the SAT-1 satellite and ride a two-minute people mover to immigration in the main terminal. AOT's free Wi-Fi at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai verifies you by email rather than an SMS code, so a line carrying no Thai number still gets on; the faster three-hour tier wants AOT's app within ten minutes. Bangkok Airways runs Samui privately and it sits outside that system.
What connectivity costs here
Tourist packs are priced by the day, not the gigabyte. AIS lists eight days with 15 GB at 299 baht, about 9 dollars, and thirty days with 50 GB at 899 baht, 27 dollars; True and dtac sell unlimited at 449 baht for eight days, 699 for fifteen and 1,199 for thirty, roughly 14 to 36 dollars, with airport counters above city-shop prices. Every SIM is registered in person against your passport, non-Thais are capped at three per brand since May 2026, and a tourist SIM cannot run past 60 days, with top-ups unable to extend it. Hotel Wi-Fi holds up in cities and thins out in beach bungalows. No European roam-like-home deal reaches Asia, and the American alternative is a daily fee rather than a trip-sized pack.
Which plan fits your trip
Carriers size a tourist pack at 15 GB for eight days, which is generous if you sleep on hotel Wi-Fi and about right if you do not. What lifts usage is the shape of the travel. Island days run long and away from anything you would trust, ferry and minivan legs leave you navigating on cellular for hours, and LINE rather than WhatsApp is how Thai hotels, dive shops and drivers answer, so it stays open all day. Grab is the default for moving around Bangkok. A Bangkok and Chiang Mai week on hotel Wi-Fi fits 5 GB. Two weeks with islands and daily uploads is a 15 to 20 GB trip.
