Local know-how

What to know before you land in Spain

Coverage and networks

Spain's masts belong to Movistar, MasOrange, Vodafone and Digi, and two are less independent than they look. MasOrange, the Orange and MásMóvil merger, also sells as Yoigo, Simyo and Pepephone, and it switched off Yoigo's old network in 2025 to run everything on Orange's. Digi is still building its own grid and roams onto Movistar's under a sixteen-year deal signed in 2025. Opensignal's April 2026 Spain report gave Movistar the download-speed award, well clear of Orange, but handed both 5G speed awards to Digi, so the fastest network overall and the fastest 5G are different companies. High Pyrenean and Picos de Europa passes weaken the signal, and Balearic ferries drop it mid-crossing. Madrid's metro has carried 4G in every station since 2021; 5G underground only began appearing in 2026.

Landing and activation

Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma and Málaga are all Aena airports, so the free Wi-Fi behaves the same wherever you land. Join Airport Free Wifi Aena, register as a guest with an email address, and you get 15 minutes of access to click the confirmation link; after that Aena sets no time limit. Nothing in the flow needs an SMS code, and that is the point when your profile cannot receive one. Spanish law requires photo ID to register a locally sold SIM and sellers log a contact address too, so carry your passport; the rule covers Spanish SIMs, not a profile you arrived with. No carrier runs its own shop at Barajas, so airport SIMs come from concessions at concession prices, on shop hours that late arrivals miss.

What connectivity costs here

Spain sells data cheaply, just not at its airports. Vodafone lists its Prepago S at €10 (about $12) for 90 GB over 28 days, and Digi's prepaid ladder runs €3 for 5 GB, €5 for 25 GB and €7 for 50 GB. Simyo sits in the same band. Lowi undercuts them but sells online only, with no counter to walk up to. Airport SIMs cost a multiple of those figures for less data. Bar and hotel Wi-Fi is free and asks for nothing, which is why 90 GB is more than most visitors will get through. EU visitors roam at home rates; UK visitors pay roughly £2 to £3 a day on EE, Vodafone and Three, though O2 still bundles Europe under a 25 GB cap.

Which plan fits your trip

Do one thing before you fly: create Cabify, Bolt and Uber accounts at home. Spanish sign-up codes arrive by SMS and a data-only profile has nowhere to receive them. After that the sums are easy. Madrid, Sevilla and Granada are dense and walkable, and a week across them sits inside 3 to 5 GB. Driving changes it. Andalucía's white villages, a Picos de Europa loop or the Costa Brava mean hours of live navigation and evening uploads, so take 10 GB and save offline maps for the sierras and any Pyrenean pass. Walking the Camino or wintering on the Costa Blanca means 20 GB or more. Andorra, Gibraltar and Morocco are all day trips from Spanish soil, and all three sit outside EU roaming.

Frequently asked about Spain eSIMs

Yes. The GetSim eSIM installs as a second profile on your phone. Your home SIM and number stay active for calls and SMS. Set the GetSim eSIM as the default for cellular data only.

Plans run on tier-1 mobile networks in Spain. The exact carrier depends on the plan; you'll see the network name on each plan card before you pay.

Typical activation is 1–3 minutes after switching the eSIM on. Many travelers install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and toggle it on the moment the plane lands.

GetSim eSIMs are data-only. For voice and SMS, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram. They all work seamlessly over the eSIM data. If you need a real phone number for verifications, pair the eSIM with a GetSim virtual number from the same wallet.

Top up the eSIM directly from your dashboard or the GetSim app, no need to install a new profile. Top-ups are billed per-GB at the same rate as the original plan.
