Local know-how

What to know before you land in Qatar

Coverage and networks

Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar are the whole market: no third operator, no MVNO shelf, no discount brand to compare. Ooredoo, the old Qtel, had the country to itself until Vodafone launched in 2009, and it claims the world's first live 5G network, switched on in May 2018. 5G here is ordinary rather than a badge, because more than eighty percent of Qatar lives in Doha and its suburbs and the build follows them, through West Bay, Msheireb, Lusail, Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah. Coverage follows the tarmac and stops roughly where it does: the dune tracks down to Khor Al Adaid, the Zekreet peninsula, the empty northwest around Al Zubarah. Qatar does not block app calling the way the UAE does, so WhatsApp and FaceTime video connect normally.

Landing and activation

One airport matters. Hamad International moves north of fifty million passengers a year through a single terminal, and its free Wi-Fi, #HIAQatar, is joined from a terms page rather than a code texted to a number you do not have. Immigration is fast: roughly eighty nationalities are waved through on a waiver rather than a visa arranged in advance. For a local line, Ooredoo runs kiosks at Exits 2, 3 and 4 in the Arrivals Hall, a Qatar Duty Free counter sits in baggage collection, and telecom booths hold the east and west ends of arrivals; each registers the SIM against your passport, so keep it out of the bag. Connecting passengers who never clear immigration reach none of it. A Red Line metro platform sits inside Terminal 1.

What connectivity costs here

The riyal is pegged to the dollar at 3.64, fixed by decree in 2001, so these numbers hold. Ooredoo's visitor packs set the benchmark, sold at airport kiosks and online at one price: QR 75 for 6 GB over seven days, QR 100 for 10 GB over fourteen and QR 150 for 25 GB over thirty, roughly 21, 27 and 41 dollars, each available as an eSIM before you fly. A plain prepaid starter in a carrier shop runs nearer QR 50 to 60 with credit inside. Data outside a bundle is metered per megabyte and gets expensive fast. Across Doha, hotel and mall Wi-Fi costs nothing and holds up. European carriers bill Qatar outside roam-like-at-home, and US passes sell by the day against local packs sold by the week.

Which plan fits your trip

The peninsula is only 160 kilometres long, so navigation costs less here than on any Gulf road trip. Delete Careem if you arrive from Dubai or Riyadh: it closed all Qatari operations in February 2023. Uber works; Karwa, the state fleet, runs on street meters. The Metro is QR 2 a ride and covers most sightseeing. May to September the heat keeps you indoors, so hotel and mall Wi-Fi carries more than expected. A day-long stopover needs barely 1 to 2 GB, three or four nights 3 to 5 GB, a week including the Inland Sea and Zekreet nearer 10 GB. Doha is more often a stopover than a destination, which is why the day figure matters more than the weekly one.

Set up your Qatar eSIM in under a minute

0

Check your phone takes an eSIM

Almost every phone sold since 2018 does. Type your model, or dial *#06# and look for an EID.

  1. 1

Buy the plan and get your QR code

Pay once with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The activation QR arrives in your dashboard and email within seconds.

  2. 2

Scan the QR from your phone settings

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → + → Use QR code. Or open the GetSim app and tap install, no QR scanning needed.

  3. 3

    Land, switch it on

Set the GetSim eSIM as your default for cellular data. Your home SIM keeps handling calls and 2FA SMS in the background.

Your real number stays online. The eSIM only handles data. Calls, SMS, banking 2FA all keep arriving on your home SIM.
Crossing borders?

Going to more than just Qatar?

A regional bundle covers Qatar and 195+ other countries on a single eSIM, often cheaper than buying separate single-country plans for a multi-stop trip.

Frequently asked about Qatar eSIMs

Yes. The GetSim eSIM installs as a second profile on your phone. Your home SIM and number stay active for calls and SMS. Set the GetSim eSIM as the default for cellular data only.

Plans run on tier-1 mobile networks in Qatar. The exact carrier depends on the plan; you'll see the network name on each plan card before you pay.

Typical activation is 1–3 minutes after switching the eSIM on. Many travelers install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and toggle it on the moment the plane lands.

GetSim eSIMs are data-only. For voice and SMS, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram. They all work seamlessly over the eSIM data. If you need a real phone number for verifications, pair the eSIM with a GetSim virtual number from the same wallet.

Top up the eSIM directly from your dashboard or the GetSim app, no need to install a new profile. Top-ups are billed per-GB at the same rate as the original plan.
