Local know-how

What to know before you land in Malaysia

Coverage and networks

Malaysia runs five operators: CelcomDigi, Maxis (prepaid brand Hotlink), U Mobile, unifi and Yes. Since mid-2026 there are two 5G networks. Four of the five ride the wholesale network built by Digital Nasional Berhad, which stopped being state-owned in March 2026 when CelcomDigi, Maxis and YTL bought out the finance ministry; U Mobile finished moving to its own ULTRA5G on 30 June 2026. In Opensignal's July 2026 Malaysia report CelcomDigi wins coverage outright, two points clear of Maxis, while U Mobile takes the speed and 5G availability awards. Both 5G networks now pass 80 percent of populated areas, a figure counting where people live rather than where you hike. About two thirds of the next 1,000 national-programme sites are in Sabah and Sarawak.

Landing and activation

File the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card in the three days before you land. It is free, Singapore citizens are exempt, and travellers from 63 countries are then eligible for the autogates at KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 rather than a staffed counter. The free network in both terminals is FREE_WIFI@KLIA, click-through, but sessions are capped at a couple of hours and you log in again. Under the MCMC standard in force since February 2026 a local SIM needs your physical passport, non-citizens get two lines per operator, and a line registered on a foreign passport expires after 90 days. CelcomDigi keeps a store in the Terminal 1 arrival hall before immigration and another after it.

What connectivity costs here

Count about four ringgit to the dollar. At the KLIA counters CelcomDigi's tourist passes are RM25, RM35 and RM60 for 7, 14 and 30 days, each plus a RM5 activation fee, unlimited but capped at 18 Mbps, with 3 GB of ASEAN roaming on the longer two. U Mobile's tourist plan, launched July 2026, is RM15, under US$4, for 100 GB over seven days. Hotlink's Travel SIM is RM25 for 40 GB spanning Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. Hotels and malls give Wi-Fi away, so a tourist pass mostly covers the hawker stalls and the highway. Roaming costs more for one day than a local week does, unless you fly in from Singapore: Singtel's ReadyRoam Neighbours pack, covering Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, is S$12 for 6 GB over 30 days.

Which plan fits your trip

Budget roughly a gigabyte a day. Grab moves you around Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru, and works on Langkawi with thin driver supply and long waits. Paying is the other constant draw: hawker stalls and small shops take DuitNow QR, which now accepts Alipay, Singapore's PayNow, Indonesia's QRIS and Thai PromptPay, so settling a plate of noodles needs a live connection. Peninsular road trips run navigation all day. A Borneo leg is the opposite problem, with stretches where no allowance helps because nothing works at all. Many trips add Singapore or Bangkok, and Malaysia is unusual in that its own tourist SIMs carry ASEAN roaming, so the local option competes across the border too.

Check your phone takes an eSIM

Almost every phone sold since 2018 does. Type your model, or dial *#06# and look for an EID.

  1. 1

Buy the plan and get your QR code

Pay once with card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto. The activation QR arrives in your dashboard and email within seconds.

  2. 2

Scan the QR from your phone settings

On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → + → Use QR code. Or open the GetSim app and tap install, no QR scanning needed.

  3. 3

    Land, switch it on

Set the GetSim eSIM as your default for cellular data. Your home SIM keeps handling calls and 2FA SMS in the background.

Your real number stays online. The eSIM only handles data. Calls, SMS, banking 2FA all keep arriving on your home SIM.
Crossing borders?

Going to more than just Malaysia?

A regional bundle covers Malaysia and 17+ other countries on a single eSIM, often cheaper than buying separate single-country plans for a multi-stop trip.

Frequently asked about Malaysia eSIMs

Yes. The GetSim eSIM installs as a second profile on your phone. Your home SIM and number stay active for calls and SMS. Set the GetSim eSIM as the default for cellular data only.

Plans run on tier-1 mobile networks in Malaysia. The exact carrier depends on the plan; you'll see the network name on each plan card before you pay.

Typical activation is 1–3 minutes after switching the eSIM on. Many travelers install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and toggle it on the moment the plane lands.

GetSim eSIMs are data-only. For voice and SMS, use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram. They all work seamlessly over the eSIM data. If you need a real phone number for verifications, pair the eSIM with a GetSim virtual number from the same wallet.

Top up the eSIM directly from your dashboard or the GetSim app, no need to install a new profile. Top-ups are billed per-GB at the same rate as the original plan.
