What to know before you land in Greece
Coverage and networks
Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova share Greece, Nova being the Wind Hellas business rebranded after its 2023 merger. Opensignal's March 2026 report, built on late-2025 data, puts Cosmote first on Coverage Experience with 8.4 points out of 10, Vodafone on 7.6 and Nova on 6.6. Vodafone holds a signal marginally more often, 98.3 percent of the time against Cosmote's 96.8. Discount the operators' 5G population figures: the same report found phones actually carrying data over 5G only 29.1 percent of the time on Cosmote, 20.6 on Vodafone and 17.6 on Nova. Greece has finished switching off 3G, and in 2024 its users sat on 2G more than anywhere in Europe bar Luxembourg, so a thin spot here means no working data rather than slow data.
Landing and activation
Most arrivals land at Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos. Its ATH Free WiFi authenticates through a browser registration page rather than an SMS code, so a data-only traveler is not locked out. The SIM counters in arrivals are Sim Local, one in baggage reclaim and one past customs, open roughly 06:00 to 22:00, and they add an activation fee near 12.50 euros to any pack. Greek prepaid SIMs are registered against a passport or national ID. Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, Chania, Kos and Skiathos are Fraport Greece airports running one click-through network, Fraport-Free. Heraklion is not: it stayed with the state, passed ten million passengers in 2025, and sits outside that system. Taxis into central Athens run a flat fare, roughly 40 euros by day and 55 after midnight.
What connectivity costs here
A prepaid starter from a Cosmote, Vodafone, Nova or Germanos shop runs roughly 10 to 15 euros, about 12 to 17 dollars, for a month of data; Cosmote's What's Up prepaid brand has been listing 20 GB near 13.50 euros. The airport is the costly door. Sim Local's Vodafone packs sit near 22.50 euros and the 12.50 euro activation fee comes on top, so budget closer to 35. Cafe Wi-Fi costs nothing; island hotel Wi-Fi is hostage to guest load and thick stone walls. An EU number costs nothing extra. UK visitors pay about 2 pounds a day on EE, Vodafone and Three, though Three caps EU data at 12 GB and O2 includes Greece up to 25 GB.
Which plan fits your trip
Navigation is what drains the plan here. The Peloponnese, Crete and the larger islands are rental-car country, and live routing on switchbacks runs all day. The taxi apps need live data and their coverage differs: Uber Taxi lists Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos but not Crete, where Bolt and Freenow, now branded Freenow by Lyft, do the work. On smaller islands you walk to the rank. Download offline maps before boarding, since Blue Star sells onboard Wi-Fi by the package on Cyclades and Crete sailings. A week of Athens plus two or three islands fits 5 to 10 GB; a fortnight driving Crete or the mainland deserves 15 to 20. Day trips to Türkiye from Kos, Rhodes or Samos leave Greek coverage mid-channel.
