What to know before you land in Germany
Coverage and networks
Three networks matter here: Telekom, Vodafone and O2 Telefónica. A fourth, 1&1, is still building its own 5G, reaching about a quarter of households, and roams on Vodafone everywhere else. Telekom took connect magazine's 2026 network test for the fifteenth time running; Vodafone and O2 finished level on points behind it, and O2 posted its best result yet, edging ahead in some cities at peak load. The regulator's October 2025 figures explain the gap outside town: Telekom covers about 87 percent of the land area with 5G, Telefónica 76 and Vodafone 75, though 98 percent of the country has 4G or 5G from someone. Underground, Munich has had 4G since 2017 and 5G across the whole U-Bahn since 2022; Berlin finished its tunnels in 2024.
Landing and activation
None of the three big airports puts an SMS code in front of its Wi-Fi. Frankfurt's Airport-Frankfurt network wants nothing but a tap on Fraport's terms, BER's works the same way, and Munich asks only for an email address, so landing on data alone costs you nothing. The local SIM is the slow path. Section 172 of the telecoms act makes the seller collect and verify your name, address and date of birth against a passport or ID before the card works, either at a counter or through an approved video check. Frankfurt's own directory lists a single phone shop, Airport Comm. Service in Terminal 1 area B, open weekdays from nine and Sundays from eleven, so an early long-haul landing finds it shut.
What connectivity costs here
Supermarket prepaid sets the benchmark. Aldi Talk, which runs on O2's network, sells its starter set for €9.99 with €10 of credit on it, after which €8.99 (about $10) buys 25 GB for four weeks and €13.99 buys 50 GB, both capped at 100 Mbit/s. Telekom charges for its own name: the prepaid year plan is €99.95 for twelve months of 20 GB a month. All of it assumes you cleared the ID check first. Airport counters sit above supermarket prices, and BER's shop directory lists no carrier store at all, just an eSIM page on the airport's own site. Cafe Wi-Fi is common without being universal; German venues only stopped being liable for what guests downloaded in late 2017.
Which plan fits your trip
Rail travel runs lean on data. Every ICE carries free WIFIonICE in both classes, so a train day costs you little beyond DB Navigator watching for the platform changes German timetables are prone to, and a week of maps, tickets and menu translation rarely clears 5 GB. Do not count on that Wi-Fi in the tunnels: the Cologne to Frankfurt high-speed line alone runs through roughly thirty, and the train leans on the same masts your phone does. Driving wants closer to 10 GB a fortnight, since navigation runs constantly and thin rural coverage is where every network is weakest. Germany borders nine countries and exactly one of them, Switzerland, sits outside the EU roaming zone; you meet it driving south past Lake Constance.
