What to know before you land in Georgia
Coverage and networks
Three networks: Magti, Silknet, which absorbed Geocell in 2018, and Cellfie, the ex-Beeline operator VEON sold in 2022, now an unbranded Vodafone partner. The 5G order is not the obvious one. Cellfie took Georgia's first 5G licences as sole bidder in August 2023 and lit Batumi, the Adjara coast, Gudauri and Bakuriani. Magti launched in October 2024 on 700, 2600 and 3500 MHz and claims the widest 5G footprint. Silknet ran a 2100 MHz signal in central Tbilisi from December 2023 but only bought proper 5G spectrum in June 2025. What matters more is 4G off the main roads: Magti is the one guides and hikers rely on for Svaneti, Tusheti and the Military Highway, Silknet goes patchy in upper Svaneti, and Cellfie thins out past the towns.
Landing and activation
At Tbilisi you land into free Wi-Fi with no registration: the networks are Tbilisi Loves You and Airport Free Wi-Fi, and you accept the terms, no code. Magti, Silknet and Cellfie all keep counters in the arrivals hall, and Georgian law makes them scan your passport against the number, so a physical SIM costs you a queue. The catch is the bus. Route 337 stops in front of arrivals for 1 lari by tapped bank card, but the airport's own timetable runs it 06:59 to 22:59, and Bolt drivers outside want 30 to 40 lari against the official airport taxi's 80. Kutaisi, where most Wizz Air flights land, has free terminal Wi-Fi and 24-hour SIM kiosks, and its shuttle runs every two hours all night for 5 lari.
What connectivity costs here
Local data is cheap and the airport is where it stops being cheap: guides put Tbilisi terminal bundles at 40 to 120 lari a month against city prices a fraction of that. A Magti SIM in town is 10 lari (about $4), and Magticom's published tariffs are 5 lari for 1 GB, 12 for 5 GB, 30 for 20 GB and 35 (about $13) for a month unlimited. Its 15-day welcome packs run 15 to 30 lari, but the dearer one buys calling minutes, not data. Cafe Wi-Fi is near universal and the municipal Tbilisi Loves You network covers Freedom Square and Agmashenebeli; mountain guesthouses share one line among every guest. Georgia sits outside EU roam-like-at-home and outside the Europe zones UK networks bundle, so check your operator's list.
Which plan fits your trip
A Tbilisi week of maps, menus and Bolt rides fits in 3 to 5 GB, and the metro and buses take a contactless card so you are not burning data on ticket apps. The country gets hungrier the moment you leave. Bolt's own city list stops at Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Gudauri, Stepantsminda, Bakuriani, Telavi, Zugdidi, Gori, Poti and Rustavi, so Svaneti means driving or a marshrutka and navigating for hours: 10 GB for a week of that. Georgia pairs with Armenia at Sadakhlo and Türkiye at Sarpi, but Azerbaijan's land border is shut to foreign nationals, so Baku means flying.
