What to know before you land in France
Coverage and networks
France has four networks, and three of them are buying the fourth: Orange, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile signed a 20.35 billion euro deal with Altice in June 2026 to carve up SFR, Bouygues taking its network in the thinner areas. Clearance runs into late 2027, so all four still trade separately. ARCEP's 2025 survey put Orange first nearly everywhere, rating 91 percent of its calls perfect against Free Mobile's 84, and 83 against 77 outside the cities. Free runs the most 5G sites and reaches 95 percent of people, but mostly on 700 MHz; the 3.5 GHz band it rates at three times 4G speed is the fast one. Underground it stays 4G: the first continuously 5G-covered line, Grand Paris Express 15, has slipped to autumn 2027.
Landing and activation
Paris means Charles de Gaulle or Orly, both carrying Paris Aéroport's free Wi-Fi, WIFI-AIRPORT at CDG. None of the big French airport portals wants a text code, which matters when your profile has no number to receive one: Nice publishes NiceAirportFreeWifi as free and unlimited behind nothing but the terms, Marseille's Airport-Free-Wifi takes two clicks and asks for no personal details, and Lyon's network is simply called Aéroports de Lyon. Buying a physical SIM instead means producing a passport, because France does not allow anonymous prepaid cards; the Relay newsagents inside CDG carry them. RATP has covered the metro and RER A and B with 4G since June 2020, so the ride in holds, though ARCEP scores the RER well below the metro.
What connectivity costs here
Relay, the newsagent chain inside the airports and main stations, publishes what it sells: Lebara's tourist card at 20 euros for 4 GB over 30 days, SFR's Welcome card at 35 euros for 10 GB, and Orange Holiday or the Bouygues prepaid card at just under 40 euros, about 46 dollars, for 20 GB. SFR's plain card is 14.99 for 2 GB. Twenty gigabytes is the ceiling here, not the floor. Cafés and hotels give it away, usually behind a portal, and the city's own Paris Wi-Fi adds over 400 hotspots in 250-odd municipal buildings, in two-hour sessions, 7am to midnight, and only while the building is open. EU and EEA SIMs roam at home rates; British, Swiss, Monegasque and Andorran ones do not.
Which plan fits your trip
Paris runs light. Tickets, maps and messaging rarely clear 300 MB a day, so five days in the city sits inside 3 GB. Driving changes that. Live traffic and rerouting through Normandy, the Loire or Provence hold the connection open for hours, and every network's ARCEP call score falls seven to eleven points outside the cities, so pull offline maps before you leave the motorway. Rail is the real weak spot: on TGVs ARCEP measured Orange holding 74 percent of calls and the other three between 56 and 61, so plan to read rather than upload. Crossing a border, check the bundle names Switzerland, the UK, Monaco or Andorra outright, because none of the four sits inside EU roaming.
