How to install an eSIM on iPhone and Android (step-by-step, 2026)

22 апр. 2026 г.6 мин чтения

A short, no-fluff install guide that works on iOS 17+ and the latest Pixel and Samsung Android builds. With the gotchas nobody mentions.

Installing an eSIM in 2026 is easier than swapping a physical SIM. There's no tray, no paperclip, no risk of dropping the tiny chip in the airport toilet. Here's the actual flow on the two platforms most people use, plus the three gotchas that catch first-timers.

iPhone (iOS 17+)

  • Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
  • Either scan the QR code from your laptop screen, or tap "Use QR Code" → "Enter Details Manually" if you only have the activation string
  • Label the plan ("Travel" works) → choose "Default Voice Line" (your home line) and "Cellular Data" (your new eSIM)
  • Done. You'll see two bars at the top, one per SIM

Android (Pixel 8 / Samsung Galaxy S24 / similar)

  • Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → "+"
  • Choose "Use QR code" or "Need help?" → enter activation manually
  • Pick the new eSIM, then enable "Use SIM" and set "Mobile data" to the eSIM
  • Keep "Calls" and "SMS" set to your home SIM unless you really mean to switch them

The three gotchas nobody mentions

First: install on Wi-Fi at home, before you fly. The QR install needs internet, and airport Wi-Fi is the worst place to do anything important. The eSIM stays installed but inactive until you toggle it on after landing. There's no penalty for installing early.

Second: turn off 'Allow cellular data switching.' Apple's auto-switch will sometimes try to use your home SIM for data when the eSIM has signal. The result is a $30 roaming bill you didn't ask for. Turn it off in Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → switch off 'Allow Cellular Data Switching.'

Third: if your phone is from a US carrier, check it's actually unlocked for international eSIMs. Some US carrier-locked phones reject foreign eSIMs even though they hardware-support eSIM. Your carrier can unlock the phone for free. Just ask before you fly.
